This week we’re thinking about being and belonging. Dominique Samari, lawyer and speaker, offers the following on belonging:

One of our deepest human needs is a feeling of belonging. We experience belonging from the moment we're born into a family and as we learn about ourselves within the context of our communities. Throughout our lives, relationships with others give us a sense of belonging, but these external relationships alone do not define our experience of true belonging. 
 
Sometimes, we walk through life disconnected from our internal self, unintentionally hiding parts of our personality, thoughts, or feelings, in order to feel like we belong. However, by hiding ourselves, we cannot really be seen by others. 

When we get to know ourselves and become aware of our identities, we then establish a genuine sense of being, and tune into what is truly important to us. When the situation calls, we can stand firmly and confidently in our beliefs because true belonging requires that we share our authentic selves with others. From this internal space, we can develop deeper connections with those around us.
 
Whenever our sense of being seems distant, mindfulness can help align us back with our ourself. Who knows — we might just learn something new about ourselves along the way :)
