Reflecting on The Power of Rituals

Reflecting on The Power of Rituals

This week, we’re thinking about the Power of Rituals. Terry Tempest Williams, American writer, educator, conservationist, and activist, sums up their profound impact here:

Personal rituals allow us a mindful moment where we have the opportunity to slow down, connect to what’s happening, and turn something ordinary into a sacred moment in space and time. They are predictable, help us create stability in our often chaotic world, and have even been called our most basic technology -- a mechanism that can change things, solve problems, perform certain functions, and achieve tangible results.

For eons, rituals have been the tools humans use to express emotion, build personal identity, bring order to chaos, orient themselves, effect transformation, and bring meaning and texture to life. Simply put, rituals = thought + action. A ritual consists of doing something in your mind (and often feeling something in your heart), and connecting it with doing something with your body.

The power of personal rituals come from being practiced daily (or weekly if that’s your vibe). Anything from brushing your teeth in the morning, calling/texting a friend and even a daily meditation practice.

Rather than simply going through the motions, integrating rituals brings vivid color! Let’s invite a sense of heightened awareness and appreciation for the otherwise overlooked abundance and beauty inherent in the everyday.

We'd love to hear from you!

What are some of your personal rituals? How do you find time for the sacred amidst your busy life? Is there a simple way to ritualize your habits?

📖 What’s Your Personal Ritual that Helps you Thrive? A Neuroscientific Account (4 mins): Nick highlights the power of rituals and their impact on our brain and behavior. Consider this the “scientific-approach”.

📖 Man’s Need for Ritual (9 mins): This piece from the Art of Manliness suggests that ritual can act as an antidote to a modern world that often feels flat, untextured, and one-dimensional. The rest of the series explores ritual as a path to the sacred and how rituals can create a shared world for its participants. Overall, a great exploration into the power and forms of rituals regardless of your personal interest in manliness.
